cold and crazy Canadian winters do not only affect the external environment, but they can also affect your home and HVAC systems. With temperatures dropping into the negatives, there are some common HVAC problems that occur during the winter time.

Airflow Issues

If you find that the rooms in your home seem to be different temperatures, there may be an airflow issue. When some rooms aren’t heating evenly they may feel much colder than the other rooms in your home. These airflow issues may be caused by a number of reasons such as debris or dust being collected in the heating system, a broken fan motor, or an insulation problem.

Dirty Filter

A clogged HVAC air filter will cause your furnace to stop working, which is a nightmare during the winter time. Because the airflow is restricted when the air filter is clogged it causes the heat to get higher, which results in the furnace switching off due to the limit switch that opens when a specific temperature is exceeded.

Broken Thermostat

A good thermostat will keep your home heated at a temperature you are comfortable and happy with. If your furnace isn’t working the real issue may be in your thermostat. The thermostat may have some faulty wiring causing it not to operate correctly, or it may be too old and ready to be replaced.

Carbon Monoxide

Carbon monoxide leaks are common from rusted or cracked heaters. Carbon monoxide leaks are extremely dangerous because they are very hard to detect, as they are odourless and colourless, and are very poisonous. The best way to detect carbon monoxide leaks are with a carbon monoxide detector.

Winter can be very chaotic due to the heavy snows, frozen roads, and negative temperatures. The chaos that winter brings can also negatively affect your home. If you run into any of these issues during the winter time, the best option is to have an HVAC technician inspect your home and do any necessary repairs. In addition, it is also good to have inspections done even if no issues have occurred in order to be aware of any changes you may need to do, such as updating a system. <a href=
